This weekend starts Fall Break at Bucknell, and even though most of our teams are in action, only three are competing at home. Field hockey plays twice at Graham Field, Saturday vs. No. 15 Boston University at 11 a.m. and Sunday vs. Yale at 2 p.m. Men’s water polo hosts No. 16 George Washington at 2 p.m. and Navy at 7 p.m. on Saturday. And volleyball has a rare Monday matinee (2 p.m.) against Colgate.

A few other items of note:

  • Men’s Water Polo has climbed to No. 9 in the national rankings (actually tied for ninth with Harvard). The Bison and Crimson are the highest-ranked East Coast teams, as each of the top eight are all from California. This is the highest national ranking in Bucknell men’s water polo history. The team is currently 11-1 and on a nine-game winning streak, which is the longest run since 1985. Think the guys are complacent? Hardly. As head coach John McBride says in this “In the Herd” feature, “We need to work on everything.”
  • Women’s Soccer is now one of only two unbeaten teams remaining in the country, after Stanford lost to Southern Cal last night. Bucknell (10-0-1) and South Carolina (12-0-1) are the only two left, and both have big challenges this weekend. The Bison travel to Navy for an 8 p.m. game in Annapolis tomorrow night, while the Gamecocks host 11th-ranked Arkansas on Sunday.
  • Men’s Soccer had a tough 1-0 loss to Lafayette on Wednesday to fall to 1-1-1 in Patriot League play this season. The Bison have a tough road test tomorrow at Colgate. In case you missed last week’s game-winner off the head of Crispin Muessle at Holy Cross, PatriotLeague.TV picked it as their No. 1 play of the week today. Perhaps a little luck was involved, but no apologies from Crispin, a senior who has worked extremely hard to earn a major role this year and was rewarded with his first career goal.
  •  Football is back in action tomorrow after a bye week, visiting Holy Cross at 1 p.m. at Fitton Field. The Bison and Crusaders will be making a little history, as this will be the very first FCS football game to stream live on Twitter. It will also stream on PatriotLeague.TV.
  •  Speaking of the Patriot League Network, eight games involving five different Bison teams will stream on PLN over the next four days. Check the PLN website for complete listings. Remember, all games are free … just click and watch! Many of the PLN games are also available on SlingTV and VerizonGo90 devices. Here is a handy guide to watching games if you are new to this whole web-streaming business.
  • How about those snazzy new buses! Thanks to the generosity of the parents of one of our student-athletes and our great relationship with Susquehanna Trailways, we were able to customize two of the buses in the fleet. They look fantastic.
  •  Stay tuned next week for some fun features on the blog, including a cool gift from a member of the Class of 1959.
